Forest-Beach School

Pioneering Forest-Beach School

Malvern College Hong Kong offers regular Forest-Beach School sessions to all Prep 1 and Prep 2 pupils. We believe that access to an outdoor environment is as important to a child’s well-being and developmental growth as a conventional classroom setting, and are proud to be one of the first schools in Hong Kong to operate a Forest-Beach School Programme with Level 3 Forest-Beach School certified leaders. Forest-Beach School aims to develop the following characteristics in our young learners: self-awareness, self-regulation, intrinsic motivation, creativity, resilience, empathy, social and communication skills, independence, a positive mental attitude, self-esteem, and confidence.

Pupils extend their education beyond the confines of the classroom walls and enjoy exposure to a rich variety of exciting and challenging opportunities to enhance their learning in a truly holistic education.

The Forest-Beach School programme is based on a philosophy of child-led learning, with a focus on all five senses. Nature, the outdoors, and open spaces become the children’s temporary classroom, with educational sessions designed around a theme typically linked to the curriculum. Teamwork, intra- and inter-personal skills are developed through games and group activities such as hide-and-seek or scavenger hunts. Self-esteem, individual practical and intellectual skills are enhanced through supervised activities like shelter building, tool handling or lighting fires.

Currently, all Prep 1 and Prep 2 pupils participate in regular Forest-Beach School sessions. The programme runs in all safe weather conditions. Bus transportation from campus to the Forest-Beach School learning sites and back is arranged through the school.
